Use Clio's AI to Extract Deadlines from Court Documents
What This Does
Clio Duo AI reads court orders, scheduling orders, and other filed documents and automatically extracts dates and deadlines, then adds them to your case calendar — eliminating manual date entry and reducing the risk of missing a critical deadline.
Before You Start
- You have Clio Manage open and are logged in
- Your firm's Clio plan includes Duo AI (available on most current plans)
- You have the court order or document ready to upload (PDF or Word)
Steps
1. Find the Duo AI feature
In Clio Manage, look for the Duo AI icon (a small sparkle/star icon) in the top navigation bar. On some accounts it appears as "Duo" in the sidebar. If you don't see it, check Clio's Settings → Features to enable it.
2. Open the matter and upload the document
Navigate to the matter/case where the court order applies. Click on the "Documents" tab, then upload the court order. Once uploaded, click on the document to open the preview panel.
3. Ask Duo AI to extract the deadlines
With the document open, click the Duo AI icon or the "Ask Duo" button. Type: "Extract all deadlines and important dates from this document and list them with the corresponding event name." Duo will scan the document and return a list of dates.
4. Review and add to calendar
Review the dates the AI found. Click "Add to Calendar" or use Clio's calendar feature to create events for each deadline. Assign the correct attorneys and set reminder notifications (typically 30 days, 14 days, and 7 days before major deadlines).
Real Example
Scenario: You receive a Scheduling Order in a commercial litigation case setting multiple briefing deadlines.
What you type: "Extract all deadlines from this scheduling order and list them with their names."
What you get:
- Motion for Summary Judgment due: June 15, 2026
- Opposition brief due: July 6, 2026
- Reply brief due: July 20, 2026
- Pre-trial conference: September 8, 2026
- Trial date: October 12, 2026
All five entries are ready to add to the matter's calendar in one click.
Tips
- Always review the extracted dates against the original document — AI reads dates well but can occasionally misread formatted tables in complex court orders
- Set your standard deadline reminder protocol (30/14/7 days) as a template to apply quickly once dates are added
- If Duo can't read the PDF (scanned documents sometimes fail), use Adobe Acrobat's "Convert to searchable PDF" feature first
